The Expert Media Guide gives all media access to experts involved with the management of long-term conditions. These experts are speaking at the Managing Long Term Conditions event in Harrogate on the 7th April, 2009.

Carole Cochrane – Chief Executive, The Princess Royal Trust for Carers

Dr Francis Cole – GP, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and Pain Management Specialist, Bradford Teaching Hospitals.
Francis is a GP in Huddersfield and CBT therapist since 1994. She runs the multidisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation service at Bradford Teaching Hospitals and she started in 1996. Francis delivers training courses in CBT techniques for mental health and long-term health condition self management. She is a co-author of the CBT self help guide "Overcoming Chronic Pain".

Natasha Curry, Fellow in Health Policy, King's Fund
Natasha Curry joined the King's Fund in 2005 and has worked in a number of fields, including long-term conditions, commissioning, and choice. She recently published an evaluation of practice-based commissioning in four PCTs and is also managing the Fund's work on predicting the risk of unplanned admission to hospital.

Dr Michael Dixon OBE, F.R.C.G.P.– GP, Cullompton, Devon & Chairman, NHS Alliance
Michael Dixon has been a GP in Cullompton, Devon for 24 years. He has been chair of NHS Alliance, representing primary care, PCTs and practice based commissioners, since 1998. His national roles also include chairing the National Life Check Board and PBC Lead on Lord Darzi’s Advisory Group. He also sits on the National Leadership Network for Health and Social Care and the Medical Leaders Professional Council, He is a Senior Associate of the King's Fund, and Honorary Senior Fellow in Public Policy at HSMC (University of Birmingham).

Andrew Donald – Chief Operating Officer, BEN PCT
Andrew Donald is Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive for Birmingham East and North PCT. He has worked in a variety of roles both inside and outside the NHS over the last 30 years. Andrew is responsible for leading the Commissioning and Redesign of services for a population of 440,000 people.
Andrew is responsible for the development of Practice Based Commissioning, Partnership and the development of commissioning of services for people with Long Term Conditions as well as commissioner market development. Andrew has led the introduction of the first telephone based care service in the UK Birmingham OwnHealth which supports people over the telephone to manage their Long-Term Condition.
Andrew is the Project Director for the PCTs World Class Commissioning programme.

Keren Down – Director, The Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST)
Keren became Director of FAST in March 2004. FAST acts to draw together expert opinion to develop strategic guidance on developments for assistive technology, with recent activity focused on workforce development. Over the past two years FAST has developed its role as a research and product commercialisation partner working with a range of national level projects.

Prof Bob Lewin - Professor of Rehabilitation, University of York and Director of the BHF Care & Education Research Group
A clinical psychologist by training, he has been working clinically and researching the self-management of heart disease for more than 20 years, and has helped to introduce a number of evidence based programmes into the NHS.

Geraint Lewis, Visiting Fellow, Nuffield Trust
Geraint is a public health physician. Working at Croydon Primary Care Trust between 2004 and 2006, he developed and implemented the Virtual Wards project, which won an unprecedented four HSJ awards and was overall winner of the Guardian Newspaper’s Public Service Awards.
He spent 2007-08 as a Harkness in New York, where his research explored the use of predictive modelling in the United States. Geraint was the 2008 recipient of the National Directors' Award at the Veterans' Health Administration in Washington DC. He is the author of the postgraduate textbook public health textbook.

Sally Parker – Project Manager, Telehealth, Nottingham City PCT
Until summer 2008, Sally Parker was Head of Adult Services at Nottingham City PCT and in this role she led on the establishment of Case Management services for the PCT, which includes the Community Matron service and a specialist COPD team, amongst others.
Prior to this Sally worked as a Locality General Manager and as a Health Promotion Specialist in the same organisation.
Sally’s career in health started as a Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse, working with people with challenging behaviours.
In June 2008 Sally changed roles to allow her to spend more time with her young family and she is currently working part time project managing the telehealth roll-out for the PCT.

Dr Sue Roberts – Chair of the Year of Care Programme Board
Sue Roberts is Chair of the Year of Care Programme Board with responsibility for overseeing the practical delivery of the project, on behalf of the Partnership Board. She was National Clinical Director for Diabetes from 2003 to 2008, having previously worked as a consultant physician across North Tyneside and Northumberland for nearly 30 years, pioneering structured and integrated diabetes care. She was in active clinical practice until 2007.
Having trained in London, Newfoundland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne, she developed comprehensive district-wide services in Northumbria, bridging primary and hospital care.She has held senior positions on a number of influential committees and groups involving diabetes care and has led the introduction and spread of rigorously evaluated education within the UK
Her main interests include the practical aspects of healthcare delivery, especially related to long-term conditions, and the education of people with diabetes.

Geoff Rollason – Programme Director, Pfizer Health Solutions
Geoff worked for the NHS for almost twenty years in community and primary care services, before spending twelve months in Indonesia as a volunteer working in a remote general hospital assisting with management and planning. He returned to the UK in late 2008 to take up this role with PHS.

Jim Thomas, Programme Head, Skills for Care
Jim manages Skills for Care's Workforce Action Learning Programme. Previously, Jim was head of workforce development for Cambridgeshire's disability service and the Valuing People Support team's expert advisor on workforce development.

Helen Tite – Managing Director of The Core Fitness & Body Studios, Advanced Exercise Specialist
Helen is an Advanced Instructor. A member of the Register of Exercise Professionals, member of the American Council of Exercise and a member of the UK Fitness Industry Association (FIA) and is an international fitness presenter who is fiercely passionate about health and fitness.

Warren E. Todd – Executive Director & Founder, International Disease Management Alliance [IDMA]
Warren E. Todd, Executive Director of the International Disease Management Alliance has been at forefront of the disease management industry for over a decade. After developing one of the first disease management programs for asthma in the early 90s and publishing the first book on DM in 1996, he founded the Disease Management Association of America in 1999 and received DMAA’s “Most Influential Individual in DM” award in 2001. In 2005 he formed the International DM Alliance and since has pioneered DM in 21 countries. Mr. Todd is a graduate of Northeastern University and has an MBA from Columbia University.

Karen Walker – Divisional Manager, Health Policy Team, Skills for Health
Karen qualified as a podiatrist in 1984 and worked in a variety of clinical roles before moving into diabetes. After a number of management roles in the NHS in 2005 she moved to Skills for Health as Diabetes Workforce Development Manager. Following an organisational restructure Karen was appointed as a Divisional Manager in the Health Policy Development Team in December 2007.
