Tariff for community services opens the door for private sector

The Department of Health has confirmed it is considering a tariff for community services in response to lobbying by primary care providers – a move that will open the door for the private sector.

If implemented private providers and foundation trusts will be able to offer community services previously provided by primary care trusts.

DoH rules out local quality frameworks

A locally determined quality framework will not be included in the final stage of the Darzi Review, according to the director general of the NHS.

Mark Britnell told GP that the advisory board for the DoH's Primary and Community Care Services, together with the BMA, were looking at a number of issues concerning the quality framework.

Primary care providers have been lobbying for a community services tariff

The Department of Health is to develop a tariff for community services - paving the way for foundation trusts and the private sector to offer services until now provided by primary care trusts.

DH director general of commissioning and system management Mark Britnell told HSJ that NHS primary care providers had been lobbying the department for the tariff. They felt it would better reward their increased workload as care shifted out of hospitals.

Y Chromosomes can seriously damage your health, warns Dr Ian Banks

Dr Ian Banks, president of the Men’s Health Forum, will be leading a workshop, in partnership with Clinical Solutions on the damaging health implications of the Y chromosome. The seminar will take place on the 1st of May at the annual Managing Long Term Conditions management exhibition, in Harrogate.

The workshop will examine the reasons behind why men die, on average, eight years earlier than women. Delegates are asked to bring with them an open mind and be prepared to examine the social, cultural and historical factors linked to this deadly phenomenon.

The publication today of NHS Direct’s call volumes and website visits - from December 21 to January 1, 2008 - shows an increase of 61% on the same period last year when total contacts reached 699,553

A "not guilty" verdict for "Men" was the outcome of a simulated "court case" at the European Health Forum Gastein, the European Union's leading congress in health politics. Clinical Solutions formed part of the jury of health professionals, NGOs and policy makers that sought to identify responsibility for the early death of men across Europe. They incriminated the variations of emphasis by member states on early diagnosis, as well as the "one policy fits all" approach when it comes to men's health. The European Health Forum called for reform of EU public health policies to reduce the early death rate of men in Europe.
